Evidence of Editing

Below is evidence of me editing the video in the form of images. The images show me looking at the storyboard to compare how my video and storyboard compare. The other images show me actually editing the video using Adobe Premiere Pro:

Evidence of filming - Narrative

Below I have included some evidence in the form of images that show me filming part of the narrative/story. In these images you can see me filming inside the house, focusing on the section of the story that shows the girls side of the relationship.

Storyboards - Outro

Below are the storyboard plans that I made for the outro, I have linked each scene to a specific lyric in the song and described the camera shot that will be used. I will be using these whilst filming the video, they will help to direct me into which shots I need to take.

Storyboards - Chorus 3

Below are the storyboard plans that I made for the third chorus, I have linked each scene to a specific lyric in the song and described the camera shot that will be used. I will be using these whilst filming the video, they will help to direct me into which shots I need to take.

Storyboards - Chorus 2

Below are the storyboard plans that I made for the second chorus, I have linked each scene to a specific lyric in the song and described the camera shot that will be used. I will be using these whilst filming the video, they will help to direct me into which shots I need to take.

Storyboards - Verse 4

Below are the storyboard plans that I made for the fourth verse, I have linked each scene to a specific lyric in the song and described the camera shot that will be used. I will be using these whilst filming the video, they will help to direct me into which shots I need to take.

E-mail to the Label Company

The project that we have been set is to create a music video using a piece of existing music. As part of the task we had to acquire the permission from the record label, which would state that we were using the music track for educational purposes only.

In order to do this we decided to send an e-mail to RCA Records. Within this e-mail, we would state all the key information that we would then send to the record label for their approval. The e-mail is below:

Dear RCA Records,

We are a group of students working on an A Level project in Media Studies. We are writing to request permission to use the following track as part of this project, 'For The First Time’ by ‘The Script’

We are creating a short music video, and with your permission the track would be used as the accompaniment to this short video. It is made purely for assessment purposes and will have no commercial usage. This video will only be viewed by our fellow pupils and the examiner from the examination board.

We promise that the artist and RCA Records will be fully recognized in the pre-production and any other products that accompany the project. If required we can also include a full copyright notice in both the planning and in video itself.

Yours sincerely

Location shots

My group and I have looked for where we would like to base our story and band shots. We looked at several different existing music videos with the same genre. Below are the examples of the locations that we are going to try and use:

Band shots:

We are looking for a isolated location for our band. One of our ideas is to use a dance studio, with the curtains pulled so that it looks completely black, which makes it look very isolated. If we use the dance studio, we are also able to control the lighting easily.

The groups second idea is try and find an small arena that we could book out. The group and I discussed that if we used a dim lighting effect and left all the seats in the arena empty, the effect of isolation would be stronger and more powerful.

Narrative:

For our narrative we need a common house for our couple to live in. As the target audience is able to relate to a common house, this location will make the video more appealing to the target audience.  Below is a image of what I am going to try and find for the video.

We also need a small bedroom for a section of our story, there is an example of a similar location we are going to try and find.

Lastly, for another section of the story, we need a car. I thought about this and felt that the if I am still trying to apply 'Uses and Gratification theory,' I need to use a car that the target audience will be able to relate to. For that reason I have decided to use the inside of a corsa, as it is a common car for our audience to have. Below is an example of what I am going to try and find.

Planning - How I applied 'Uses and Gratifications theory'

How I am going to apply 'Uses and Gratifications theory' in my work

In order to target and appeal to my target audience I am going to apply the 'Uses and Gratification theory' to my music video. To gain my target audience I am going to have to try and use all four of Bulmer & Katz four reasons.

I am going to apply Personal Identity. This is going to be done through the age of my actors and through the fashion and role models. I am going to have my actors and members of the band wear clothing that will represent and relate the genre. These means clothes that are similar to 'The Script,' 'Green Day' and others similar bands that fit into the alternative indie rock genre. By applying this reason of the theory to my video, it will allow the audience to link the video and themselves to the genre and the same group, which is the 'Personal Identity.'

I am going to apply Integration and social Interaction through the use of a relationship. By showing the emotions between two characters within the story, the audience is going to be able to relate to it and find it more appealing. The audience is going to be able to identify with sections of the relationship, and will accept it easily. I am going to show this through still shots of the two characters being close and happy and also using flashbacks of them doing the iconic relationship actions.

I am going to apply Entertainment to my music video through the use of escapism. This is going to be done through the story, which will allow the audience to feel the good and sad times in a relationship. The story is going to show a couple coming to terms with a pregnancy, showing the lows they both go through, the audience will find this appealing as they enjoy to feel the emotion the characters feel. What makes my video different from others, is it gives the audience the 'realistic' experience of what it is like for two teenagers to come to terms with a pregnancy. This realism makes the story more appealing to the audience, but it does let them escape from their own problems and focus on someone else for a time.

I am not able to apply Information into the music video. But through the use of the three other Bulmer & Katz reasons, I feel that I am applying 'Uses and Gratifications theory' to my video effectively.

Research - What is Uses and Gratification Theory

Uses and gratification theory is a popular theory to understanding mass communication within audiences. The theory focuses on more on the audience, and 'what the audiences do to media' rather than 'what media does to the audience.' It suggest the audience is not just passive, but that they actually take an active role in interpreting the media text and integrating it into their own lives. The theory says that audience choose media that meets their needs. Looking at the theory in more depth, it suggests that audiences use the media to fulfil specific gratifications.

In 1974 Bulmer & Katz suggested reasons for consumption by the audience, they were as followed:

Information - satisfying curiosity and general interest.

Personal Identity - finding reinforcement for personal values and finding models of behaviour.

Integration and Social Interaction - identifying with others and gaining a sense of belonging and finding a basis for conversation and social interaction.

Entertainment - escaping, or being diverted, from problems and relaxing.
